Is pet medications & vet bills FSA eligible?

Not eligible

No — veterinary care and pet medications are not FSA or HSA eligible.

FSA and HSA money covers medical care for you, your spouse, and your dependents — pets don't count, no matter how the prescription is written. The exception is a trained service animal for a person's disability: buying, training, and maintaining one (including food and vet care) is a qualified expense.

Not eligible — find a close match instead

Pet medications & vet bills doesn't qualify on its own, but a near neighbor often does — the medicated or SPF version of a product, or an in-office treatment instead of the at-home one. Search the eligibility checker for an alternative your FSA will cover.

Does the same answer apply to an HSA?

Yes. FSAs and HSAs share the same qualified-medical-expense rules (IRS Publication 502), so eligibility is identical. The difference is the deadline: FSA money is forfeited at the end of the plan year, while HSA money never expires.
